Chapter Sixteen

Behind the wheel of his mate’s shiny pickup truck, Brody reflected on the fact that he should’ve done a little more recon before driving to the post. Considering how quickly personnel changes could occur, it was unlikely the post commander was the same as when he was last there. Which meant, asking for Lieutenant General Coates by name could yield him nothing.

Had he not been ruled by simmering rage when he even heard Quinlin’s name, he could’ve contacted him for more current information. No matter how much his mate said he shouldn’t, he blamed himself for not being more in control and capable of shoving the irrational feelings aside.

Either way, as they drove past the squat, brick-outlined sign announcing the name of the garrison, various scenarios floated around in his mind. Portia seemed enthralled by the large tanks flanking the helicopter on the small knoll above the sign.

The post was a city within a city. As they pulled in behind a minivan, another family vehicle passed them, leaving. A young woman drove with two small children strapped in behind her. The large rear windows allowed him to clearly see the packages in the cargo area. The boom gate lifted allowing the minivan in front of them to roll through, making them the next in line.

Brody lowered his window and handed his ID to the Private at the gate. In an effort to make it easier for him to get through the checkpoint, he had worn combat greens. His Sergeant First Class patch, along with the others noting his unit were clearly displayed.

Brody watched as the young man looked from the photo to his face then back again. In addition to the credentials being out of date, Brody’s beard and longer hair were a far cry from the clean shaven, buzz cut man on the military identification.

While he was neatly groomed, his appearance wasn’t regulation. Granted, members of his team weren’t generally required to be clean shaven with their hair cut short. In the past, he’d done it out of convenience.

His mate was fond of running her fingers through his long tresses and grabbing his beard during sex. He hadn’t shorn either off for that very reason. They were for her pleasure.

“Give me just a moment sir.”

Stepping away from the truck, the Private entered the guardhouse. For a few moments, only the sound of fingers tapping on a keyboard came from the partially open door. When the tapping stopped, the tonal notes of a telephone were heard.

It was obvious the Private recognized something on Brody’s credentials, but he wasn’t aware of all the details. If he were, he would’ve sent a written message instead of calling his commanding officer, who passed him up the chain until he reached the Post Commander. Brody was able to make out both sides of each conversation.

“Remington.”

“Sir, this is Private Henderson at Gate One. Sergeant First Class Parata is here. His creds say he’s special ops. I wouldn’t have called sir, except his ID is out of date.
